Altenew Build-A-Flower: Fuchsia Release Blog Hop + Giveaway + Video

Hey everyone, welcome back! I’m so excited to join Altenew for the October 2019 Build-a-Flower: Fuchsia Release (ALT) and Blog Hop! Thanks so much to my good friend Virginia Lu for relaying you over to my blog. If you get lost along the way or want to relive the amazing inspiration from the team of designers for this release, head back over to the Altenew Card Blog to find the complete blog list.

I recently purchased the Altenew – Winter Wonderland Watercolor Brush Markers and I got them at around the same time as I received the Fuchsia stamp set (ALT). In the short amount of time that I have joined Altenew in their Build-a-Flower releases, I’ve been waiting for an outline set to come out. I thought it would be a perfect time to film the full no-outline alcohol marker coloring tutorial. Now that the time has come with the outline set, I opted for a different look for these flowers.

I used a technique that many of you may know about called “negative space” painting. This concept does not only apply to watercolor. Think about this coloring technique as adding drop shadows to your next project. Or if you are illustrating still life, you may need to observe the space between objects to attain the correct spacing between two subjects. This is all “negative space” and I hope it is useful for your next paper crafting project.

I love using the Crisp Dye Inks from Altenew; the Pretty in Peach ink bundles pair wonderfully with this flower. This Build-A-Flower: Fuchsia & Ink Bundle (ALT) is at a special 5% discount!

I made another project for this release using the coordinating dies and a few ink pads. I paired it with one of my favorites Altenew – Leaf Clusters Stamp and Die Set to get a fuller fuchsia bundle (ALT). I love the window scene inspired by arbors at Japanese gardens. Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

  1. The negative space painting card is beautiful and I do need to work on that technique, But your other card is stunning and I can’t help but like it best. 🙂

  2. You brought out a beautiful depth in the card with your shading! Btw I didnt catch your link to the white mat that you were using. Only the black glass Holtz mat is listed.

  3. I love the negative space technique, it something I really want to try and I must say you did your video so beautifully and your card is just a gorgeous work of art. Love the depth look of the card and the whole card is my #1. The second card is beautifully colored and has a depth also but lacks the beauty of your first card.

  4. Gorgeous fuchsia cards, LOVE the negative space painting, so soft and elegant. Your window card is gorgeous, love how you used the leaf clusters to really fill out the space, and it does remind me of a look into a Japanese garden! Thanks for another awesome video tutorial, I want to try the negative space painting technique.

  8. I learn something useful every time I watch your videos. The first card is so gorgeous. I love the negative space and how much it looks like the front flowers are way out from the back ones.
