Paint-a-Flower: Coral Sunset

I recently made a video on the Altenew YouTube Channel about adding details to cards. This card was the initial spark to that video. While I love coloring the Altenew Paint-a-Flower outline images, I wanted to try something else. The details on this card stemmed from embroidery art…then it led to tattoos…and then suddenly I found myself daydreaming of a haunting and dark floral arrangement.

I started with a simple mask of the arrangement that I made from typing paper. I stamped the main outline image in the cluster as shown with Permanent Black Ink. I used my favorite 9X12 Watercolor Pad as my watercolor paper. Then I used Jet Black watercolor from the 36 Watercolor Pan Set to add slight shadow details to the petals. Then I obliterated the leaves and stems by blacking them out completely for that deep and daring feeling.

I finished the card with added dots and cross hatch details using the Fine Liner Pen Set from Altenew. Then I added white splatters and a coordinating sentiment from the Forever in Love Stamp Set.

Here is that video I mentioned earlier, by the way.

  1. This is a beautiful stamp set and is perfect to stamp and color as is! However, I do love seeing other ideas for a stamp’s use and this is gorgeous! Thanks for the info and video reference for it’s creation. It’s nice to have lots of options for these beautiful stamps and I still use my older ones as well!

  2. This is really beautiful; but in a melancholy kind of way. I can almost imagine soft blues music playing. This is a very neat way to use the stamp set.

  3. Love the card! Love all the depth you created with the black stippling! I really enjoyed the video showing how to add the dots and lines. These touches add so much to your cards. Always glad to see your name on a blog hop as I know we will see a wonderful card.

  4. Absolutely beautiful! Making the leaves black sounds like it would result in a depressing card but so not true! The contrast is perfectly toned (no surprise). Thanks for a lovely card and the detail video.

  5. I like the dark coloring of the card. I’ve been wanting to do a few cards with just the black, white, grey etc. This is great inspiration. Thanks for sharing your talent.

  7. Beautiful cards and nice video! I love the idea of little cross hatches on the flowers/ leaves for added texture or that extra ooomph a card might need. Great idea! Thanks!

  9. Wow, Jaycee. I don’t know how people are saying “simple” in relation to this card because a lot of thought, creative stamping, painting and pen work has gone into this. The result is, as you said, dark and dramatic, and it’s just beautiful.
