Paint-a-Flower: Sweet Pea

Botanical Watercolor Card

I love the flowing and linear bouquet of this Paint-a-Flower: Sweet Pea. For some reason, this Sweet Pea illustration reminded me of one stroke paintings typically done in acrylic. To replicate this style on my Sweet Pea petals, I concentrated more of the pigment toward the tip of my paint brush and applied paint in a wet-on-wet technique. I followed the curvature of the petal with my paintbrush.

I stamped the Sweet Pea cluster in Limestone Crisp Dye Ink. My canvas of choice as Arches Hot Press 140 lb watercolor paper. This ensured I captured small highlights and crisp detail between petals, flowers, and the delicate stem. I followed the color palette from Lathyrus odoratus ‘Black Knight.’

With the remaining paint on my palette, I added some splatter and stamped my sentiment in Obsidian Pigment Ink. I mounted my watercolor piece onto my folded notecard base to finish this clean botanical illustration style that I love.
