Colored Pencil Botanical Illustration Tranquil Rose

I used this stamp set in my Botanical Illustration Inspired Watercolor Altenew Academy Course and wanted to recreate a card with the Woodless Coloring Pencil Set (ALT). The size of the bloom and leaves are perfect for practicing fine pencil strokes which is why I originally picked it for class.

I was playing around with different color combinations for my rose, only to find out that it has already been made for me in the Woodless Coloring Pencil product insert. I took my time forming the veining of the rose. Then I made sure to include plenty of highlights in the leaves by leaving plenty of white space.

How To Make Botanical Illustration Inspired Cards

  1. Stamp the rose and leaf images from Tranquility Rose Stamp Set in Limestone Crisp Dye Ink. I used a smooth white cardstock thin enough to fussy cut comfortably.
  2. Use the Woodless Coloring Pencils to meticulously color the stamped images. Leave plenty of white space and highlights for dramatic blooms and foliage.
  3. Fussy cut the images and arrange on a cream colored background.
  4. Add Jet Black Ink Spray ink splatters to the background and parts of the flower.
  5. Foam mount a coordinating sentiment strip.

  1. I colored one of the flowers in my Altenew Water Color Book with colored pencils and though it turned out well, I did not achieve the look I wanted. I think your tips and technique achieved that and I will try again either on another page or on an image I stamped on more color pencil friendly paper. Thanks!

  2. Beautiful coloring on this gorgeous rose Jaycee! I am a huge fan of white space left on or added to images! I struggle with leaving that white space on my projects and seeing how beautiful your results are gives me encouragement to “leave or add the white spaces”. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous work!

  3. Your rose is gorgeous JC. I was surprised you weren’t using watercolor paper, but I saw in your instructions that you didn’t add any water! Thanks for the inspiration and instructions!

  6. Great color share. I like how the petals were done. I haven’t had a chance to try out the pencils and appreciate a sample of the color range.
