Paint-a-Flower: Fashion Monger Dahlia

This collarette type of Dahlia has a beautiful rim of brush stroke magenta petals. I thought this was a necessary essence to capture with my watercolor painting. I started with a stamped outline in Limestone Crisp Dye Ink on Hot Press watercolor paper. I masked off an overlapping area so that I had a continuous image to color.

I painted the blooms with my favorite Altenew Watercolor Brushes in the Detail bundle. I used the variety of colors included in the Altenew 36 Watercolor Pan Set to get the right blend of magenta for the outer petals. Then I used a mix of greens to paint the leaves in a yellow-green hue.

I finished this card with a subtle blend of white and black splatters from Pure White and Jet Black Ink Sprays, respectively. Then finally I stamped one of the coordinating sentiments in Paint-a-Flower: Fashion Monger Dahlia in Obsidian Pigment Ink. Fortunately this painting stayed flat from a series of light washes and I could mount it directly onto an A2 folded note card base.
