Hey everyone! It’s the 22nd of the month, which means my crafty friends and I are joining Altenew for the brand new Paint-a-Flower: Fashion Monger Dahlia (ALT) and Blog Hop! Thanks so much to Norine Borys at the Altenew Card Blog for relaying you over to my blog. If you want to relive the amazing project ideas from the team of designers for this release, head back over to the Altenew Card Blog or keep reading to find the complete blog list. Don’t miss the wonderful giveaway opportunities as well–more on that down below!

Paint-a-Flower: Fashion Monger Dahlia

This collarette type of Dahlia has a beautiful rim of brush stroke magenta petals. I thought this was a necessary essence to capture with my watercolor painting. I started with a stamped outline in Limestone Crisp Dye Ink on Hot Press watercolor paper. I masked off an overlapping area so that I had a continuous image to color.

I painted the blooms with my favorite Altenew Watercolor Brushes in the Detail bundle. I used the variety of colors included in the Altenew 36 Watercolor Pan Set to get the right blend of magenta for the outer petals. Then I used a mix of greens to paint the leaves in a yellow-green hue.

I finished this card with a subtle blend of white and black splatters from Pure White and Jet Black Ink Sprays, respectively. Then finally I stamped one of the coordinating sentiments in Paint-a-Flower: Fashion Monger Dahlia in Obsidian Pigment Ink. Fortunately this painting stayed flat from a series of light washes and I could mount it directly onto an A2 folded note card base.

I have an advanced watercolor class over at Altenew Academy where I share my favorite watercolor techniques for realistic floral painting. I have an affiliate banner linked below that will take you directly to the class store-front. Thank you for your support!

  1. Wow, when I first saw the picture for this card I thought it was a layer stencil like the other dahlia layer stencil! Beautiful painting. 😍
