May 2022 Craft-a-Flower: Butterfly Bush

Dimensional and Dynamic Layering Blooms

I modeled my Butterfly Bush after other cultivars of Buddleia davidii. I found many of the lavender/lilac colored panicles online and wanted to bring that color palette onto my card. The floral dies are sure to make a statement on any card front. I made sure to use that to my advantage with Craft-A-Flower: Butterfly Bush and pack a lot of color onto the die cut layers.

I used a mix of three different Altenew color families to make the inflorescence.
Quick tip: I do not glue down each layer completely. I apply a strong enamel based glue to the center of the die cut and curl up the edges of the layer. This gives me more realistic cast shadows when viewing the card face-on. This also gave me a fuller bloom since the petals actually come toward you. I like to use a heavier weight cardstock (110lb) to preserve the finer cuts of cardstock to ensure safe mailing.

How To Make This Die Cut Card
- Deboss a white cardstock panel using Dotted Scales Debossing Cover Die.
- Ink blend gradients on heavy weight 110lb smooth white cardstock. I used the inks listed below:
- Ink blend the gradients with a Large Ink Blending Tool. Mix color families in the ‘light’ and ‘dark’ values for interesting floral variation.
- Cut and glue small squares of Caramel Toffee cardstock from Summer Afternoon Gradient Cardstock to fill in the centers of each flower.
- Use the Set D Altenew Artist Markers to color in the branch die.
- Make gradients of the Green Valley Mini Ink Cube Set to color the leaf layers.
- Arrange and add dimension with Instant Dimension Foam Tape.
- Add splatters with Pure White and Jet Black Ink Spray.
